Workshop # 3/26
Mating Cranes
Wildlife Photo Workshop - 14 - 19 March 2026 - Masuria
fully booked
The crane, which used to be a rare breeding bird in Masuria, is now quite common here. The varied terrain, featuring numerous lakes, reed beds, wetlands, meadows, and fields, creates an excellent habitat for these birds to breed and find food. Currently, the population of cranes in this area is approximately 5,000 breeding pairs. These unusual birds are a symbol of spring, but also of the coming autumn. In literature, the crane often symbolises happiness, prosperity, fertility, and longevity. In ancient Greece, the appearance of a crane over a farm was perceived as a prophecy announcing a good year, heralding an abundance of grain and various goods.
Due to mild winters, these birds have been wintering more often in Poland for several years. Depending on the region and temperature, they often stay close to their home ranges, flying further only in the event of frost or heavy snowfall.
Usually, from mid-February to mid- or late March (depending on the location), spectacular performances occur- the cranes' mating season. These are unique performances with extraordinary choreography written by nature. There is room for dancing, jumping, singing, tenderness, and intimacy. Watching them is an unforgettable and even breathtaking experience.
Masuria is also home to a growing population of white-tailed eagles, which currently numbers approximately 32-37 breeding pairs. Currently, this number is growing. In addition, many birds have not yet reached adulthood. The Piska Forest in Masuria creates excellent living conditions for white-tailed eagles.
There are many lakes where these birds get food, and large, old trees are places for their nests. During the early Spring, these birds actively search for food in preparation for the breeding season.
The photo workshop is an excellent opportunity to watch and photograph mating cranes and meet the king of the skies, the white-tailed eagle, and numerous species of small birds and woodpeckers.
When you are in the Piska Forest, you are in the very heart of nature, and its wealth is at your fingertips.
